Snowflake 2010

On Saturday, March 20, seventh grade students from Lakeview, Herrick and O'Neill will have the unique opportunity to participate in a Snowflake event. Snowflake is a day long event for seventh grade students that explore leadership and communication skills, healthy decision making, substance abuse prevention and how to resist negative peer influences. The event is planned and implemented by trained high school students with adults serving in advisory roles. The program is a collaborative effort between Downers Grove North, Downers Grove South, Lakeview, Herrick Middle School, O'Neill Middle, The Downers Grove Police Department and Helping Girls Navigate Adolescence (HGNA). District 66 and District 58 believe this program is important to help our seventh grade students navigate through adolescence. The Snowflake Event will take place at Lakeview Junior High from 2-9 pm. Registration is $20 a person and registration is being accepted in the school offices until March 8, 2010. Lakeview students received information on this event this week. Additional registration packets will be available in the office. Questions can be referred to Mrs. Liles or Mrs. Conley.

Fundraising for Haiti

Over the past few weeks students at Lakeview have been raising money for the Red Cross Haiti Relief. Students showed their support in a couple of ways. Many students purchased tickets to "Pie A Teacher" in the face during the Pack the Place Nights. On Friday, February 5th, students wore "Hats for Haiti". Any student wearing a hat was asked to donate a dollar and proudly wear a Haitian Flag. Many students donated more than a dollar! In total, the Lakeview students raised $790.00. We are very proud of our students! Character does count at Lakeview Jr. High!

Solo Festival 2010

On Saturday, February 6, over 250 instrumental and vocal music students from grades 5-8 took part in our annual solo festival. Students prepared a solo to be adjudicated by a professional. Students are then given a rating on their performance. If they play well enough they are awarded a Division I or Division II rating and receive a medal for their efforts. Some students are given a perfect rating of which they then have the opportunity to perform for a panel of judges at the end of the day and a chance to be selected as the outstanding soloists of the day. Twenty one students received a perfect score and are pictured above. Then three students were chosen as outstanding soloists of the day (also pictured above). Congratulations to all of the students who participated! Nice job!!!
