Eighth Grade Ballroom Dance

The Eighth Grade Students have been working hard in PE class on their Ballroom Dance Unit. Four days a week they receive instruction, from a professional dancer from Celebrity Dance Studio, on various ballroom dances. The culmination of this unit of study is next Friday, December 19, 2008. On Friday (12/19) from 1:15- 2:50 p.m. students will be demonstrating their newly acquired dance skills and enjoying snacks / treats from the PTO. Parents are encouraged to come (and bring cameras) to see the students dance. (Your students will tell you that you are not invited, but I am telling you otherwise.) In PE class the "dress code" will be discussed with students. Students are encouraged to dress up for this event (girls typically wear a skirt or dress and boys wear nice slacks and a shirt with a collar).

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. I hope to see many of you next Friday!

Lakeview Staff Book Club

One of my professional goals this year is to start a book club for the staff at Lakeview. The goal is to read books that are related to education, meet to discuss the books and hopefully make a change in your life and /or classrooms. Each trimester I will select a different book and solicit interested Lakeview teachers to join. This trimester the group (composed of 16 Lakeview Teachers and Support Staff) read the book, Pretending to be Normal by Liane Holliday Willey. Liane’s book is about living with Asperger’s Syndrome. Not only does Liane have Asperger’s Syndrome, but she has a daughter with the same diagnosis. This is an excellent book which allows the reader to “get inside the head” of someone with Asperger’s Syndrome. The Book Club participants overwhelmingly enjoyed this book and easily made connection from the book to education and life in general. Now, I must find a book to top this one for our next selection!

Eighth Grade End of the Year Activities

In years past, Lakeview faculty and staff have always tried to provide the graduates with a unique and special celebration marking the end of elementary school and the beginning of high school. This celebration has included a variety of different activities including trips out of town, Great America etc. For several years now, students have spent the day at Great America and then had a nighttime dance at local restaurant. As most of you know this is not a unique opportunity for our students as they frequently visit this amusement park on their own time.

Last year, under the direction of the Board of Education, we surveyed surrounding area schools to see how they celebrate this exciting time of the year. The results were vast! (Some districts have no celebration at all and that is not the direction we would like to go.)

On Tuesday, students were asked to give their input into the selection of a unique and special celebration. They were give three options: Odyssey Boat Trip and Dance, North Beach Club and Dance or Great America and a Dance. Each option was explained and questions answered prior to giving input.

Overwhelmingly, the eighth grade class was in favor of the Odyssey Boat Trip and Dance! The details have not been finalized yet, but we foresee this as a great day spent on the Odyssey with friends cruising Lake Michigan. While on board, students will have a dance with a DJ, unlimited food and a great “adult” opportunity.

The results of the survey will be shared with the Board of Education later next month as we move along with our planning for the May / June events.

Blog Compilations

As you know all of our teachers have their own blog sites. We realize that it is very time consuming to check individual blogs on a consistent basis. Mrs. Foellmer, our computer teacher, has developed a Blog Compilation link for each grade level.

On this site you will find a compilation of the blogs for that grade level. Included in this link are the two most recent entries for each teacher blog. Links and multimedia will not appear on this feed. To see the actual blog entry, click on the title of the post, which will take you to the actual blog. Please note that spacing, paragraphs etc may not be accurately displayed as was in the original post.

The Blog Compilation link is found on each grade level site below the test schedule and homework links. Hopefully you will find this helpful!

After lunch, teachers will be working on a variety of activities which will improve upon our school and student achievement. The Science Department, district wide will be working in a workshop to learn more about their new textbook series and get their questions answered. The Math Committee, at Lakeview, will be looking into how math fits with RtI. Various other teachers will be beginning curriculum adoptions, reviewing safety procedures and having discussions on how to implement vocabulary skills across the content areas. So, although the students get an afternoon off the teachers continue to work!

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Welcome Back! I hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer and is ready for a great school year. We have had a fantastic start to the school year and look forward to it continuing. As always, I am available via email, phone or in person if you have any questions or concerns.

We have changed a policy in handbook regarding food deliveries. The policy, found on page 7 of the Lakeview Handbook, is listed below also. We appreciate you cooperation in this matter.

Students may not order food for delivery at school from restaurants or other establishments. In accordance with the state goal of promoting good nutrition, parents are discouraged from bringing “fast food” in for their child’s lunch. Parents who do choose to bring in “fast food” for their children’s lunch may do so only for their own child. Food for a group of students is not permitted.

Iraq from a soldier's perspective

This morning, the eighth grade was treated to a presentation from Mr. Justin Conley. Justin is Andrea Conley’s (Lakeview Health Teacher) husband who has just returned from serving nine months in Iraq. As part of their community service project the eighth grade students collected items for care packages and wrote cards and letters to the soldiers in Iraq. Justin came to personally thank the students for their packages and letters as well as share a little bit about what life in Iraq is like. The students learned about life on a base which includes restaurants and gyms. Students were also allowed to ask questions ahead of time which Justin worked into his presentation. This was an eye opening presentation that was well received by the students and staff alike.

Fire Safety

This past weekend we “Sprung Ahead” with our clocks. When we change time you frequently hear “change the batteries in your smoke detectors as well”. I can speak from personal experience that this is an essential thing to do!

This past weekend there was a fire at my parent’s home. Thankfully, no one was injured and the damage is minimal. The smoke detectors in the house alerted them of the fire and then my father was able to contain the fire with the use of a fire extinguisher until the fire department arrived.

I admit I never really listened to the advice of changing your smoke detector batteries with the time change. This experience has changed my mind about this! We now have new batteries in our smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher on each level of our home.

I encourage everyone to change the batteries in their smoke detectors and to have a fire extinguisher on each level of your home!
