Today marks the mid-term point of the trimester! If you have not done so already, I encourage you to use Parent Connect to check your child’s grades online. If you are having difficulty with Parent Connect please contact the office and we would be glad to assist you in this matter. Students who are ineligible to participate in extra-curricular activities due to one or more “F” grades will receive official notification via the US Mail in the next few days.

Martin Luther King Day

  • There is no school Monday, January 21, 2008, but how many of your children know why? Monday is Martin Luther King Day. Most school children don’t care why there isn’t school; just that there isn’t! I encourage you to use these facts listed below to engage your child in a meaningful discussion about Martin Luther King Day. And don’t forgot to enjoy your day off of school too!

    · Martin Luther King was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta Georgia
    · He died on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39 in Memphis Tennessee
    · He was one of the main leaders of the American Civil Rights Movement
    · King is most famous for his “I Have A Dream” speech in March 1963 in Washington D.C
    · In 1986 Martin Luther King Day was established as a national holiday in the United States · Dr. King’s birth certificate was mistakenly recorded as “Michael King”, but not discovered until 1934
  • King is one of the ten 20th century martyrs from across the world that are depicted in statues above the Great West Door of Westminster Abbey, London

Cell phones, I-Pods and Gameboys at school

Are students allowed to have Cell phones, I-Pods or Gameboys at school? Yes, they can. There are rules to be followed when possessing such items at school though. Today is Thursday and I have had to deal with such rules being broken a lot this week, so I thought it might be good to refresh everyone’s memory of the rules.

The Lakeview handbook (page 35) states the following: The possession of cellular phones at school is discouraged. Cellular phones are to be turned off during school hours. The use of a cellular phone during school hours is forbidden unless an emergency situation that threatens the safety and well being of the student, other students or staff members exists. The school is not responsible for lost or missing Cellular Phones, I-Pods or Gameboys.

When a student has a Cell phone, I-Pod or Gameboy that is out or on during school hours it is taken and given to the office. If this is a first offense the item is returned to the student at the end of the day after reviewing the rules with them again. If it is a second offense, the parent will be contacted. I encourage you to review these rules with your child.

A New Year is a great time to get involved!

Did you or your child make a New Years Resolution to get more involved? The New Year is a great time to get involved in something new or different. The Lakeview Student Body was treated to a performance by the newly revived Lakeview Choir before Winter Break. Did that spark interest in someone wanting to join the choir? The choir meets on Tuesday mornings at 7:10 a.m. in Ms. Berman’s room. New members are always welcome! The Character Counts club meets on Tuesday mornings, as well, at 7:30 a.m. in the IMC. This club is open to new members too. So, if you aren’t musically inclined, perhaps this club is for you. If you are a parent looking to get involved in the New Year the PTO is always looking for volunteers for various committees and activities. Thank you to all of the parents who already do volunteer to make Lakeview a great place for the students! Happy New Year!
